Masterclass in the Platon school in the town of Katerini, Pieria

On the 11th March 2014, Professor Christine Kourkoumelis, Stylianos Vourakis and Stylianos Angelidakis visited the town of Katerini (north of Greece) where an HYPATIA Masterclass took place at the premises of the Platon High School, About 40 students participatedfrom five different schools (both public and prvate)in the town and wider region. The students came to the school with their teachers and had the chance to perform hands-on exercises processing data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN. They were first introduced to the physics of the ATLAS experiment by Professor Christine Kourkoumelis. A live connection with the Control Center of the ATLAS experiment gave them the chance to get acquainted with the instrumentation used in the experiment and ask questions to the scientists at CERN. Finally, a detailed introduction to the HYPATIA software was provided by Stelios Vourakis, after which the hands-on exercise - carried out with the help of Stylianos Angelidakis - for the rediscovery of the Z boson and the Higgs boson took place. Furthermore the 10 teachers accompaning the students were intoduced to the Inspiring Science Education Project in a lecture prepared by A.Lazoudis of EA and delivered by C.Kourkoumelis.The teachers were encouraged to subscribe to the project's data base and different possibilities about their action plan were discussed. http://www.platon.edu.gr/en/
